Intro Flashcards
In what ways do we describe skin lesions?
site: face trunk, limbs
number of lesions: single, multiple, rash
distribution: a/symmetrical, sun-exposed, creases
arrangement: coalescing, annular, grouped, linear, serpiginous
type of lesion: flat, raised, fluid-filled, broken surface
texture (feel it)
color: pink, red, purple, yellow, white, brown, black, blue, grey
border: nough’ said.
Extent: localized, regionalized, widespread, disseminataed, generalized
Describe each of the following:
- macule
- patch
- papule
- nodule
- plaque
Macule: less than 1 cm, flat, nonpalpable lesion
patch: greater than 1 cm, flat nonpalpable lesion
papule: less than 1 cm, elevated, well circumscribed, usually dome shaped
nodule: palpable, solid bump, greater than 1cm, rounded surface
Plaque: elevated well circumscribed, solid lesion, greater than 1cm, plateau like flat top. Diameter is greater than the thickness. often formed by coalescence of papules)
Describe each of the following:
- wheal
- cyst
- vesicle
- bullae
- pustule
Wheal: elevated plaque or papule with erythematous irregular border and pale center.
(hives)
cyst: sac or cavity that contains fluid
vesicle: small superficial, less than 1cm, filled with serous fluid.
bullae: raised, greater than 1 cm, filled with serous fluid
pustule: small cloudy filled lesion containing many inflammatory cells, circumscribed.
Describe each of the following:
- telangiectasia
- crust
- scale
- induration
- erosion
- ulceration
- atrophy
- fissure
- scar
Telangiectasia: dilated superficial vessels, not broken.
crust: vary in color, serum, pus, or blood that is dried on the skin surface
scale: thickened stratum corneum
induration: increased firmness and thickening of the dermis
erosion: loss of superficial layers of the epidermis, does not penetrate beneath the epidermal-dermal border therefore it will heal without scarring.
ulceration: skin defect that extends into the epidermis, dermis or deeper. Heals with scarring.
Atrophy: thinning of the epidermis.
