What is Wakefield’s harmful dysfunction?
Dysfunction or abnormality is NOT enough to consider something a psychopathology –> it needs to be harmful
–> The influence of social values on defining mental disorder –> society defines WHAT is a disorder
What is Lilienfeld’s critique on psychopathology?
How do we know what is the “normal functioning” of the brain
- Some psychopathology can represent adaptions –>i.e. depression after loss to conserve energy
What is Widiger’s critique on psychopathology?
- Mental disorders are constructs
- Cannot be directly observes or measure and therefore we need a multimodal approach and definition to understand it
- Different approaches will capture different aspects but it cannot be complete
