intro Flashcards
who was the first one to classify animals scientifically?
ARISTOTLE
how did aristotle classify ?
he classified in 2 groups, animals and plants; animals in ones who do have red blood and ones who don’t, whereas for plants in shrub, herbs and trees
who formed the two-kingdom classification?
it was done by CARL LINNAEUS
why was the 2 kingdom class not taken under consideration?
cause it couldn’t differentiate b/w multi and unicellular, pro and eukaryotes, photosynthetic and non-photosynthetic
what characteristics where felt as a need to be included in classification?
mode of nutrition, habitat, reprod, evolutionary rel, nature of wall, cell stru etc etc
who gave 5 kingdom classification?
R.H ROBERT WHITTAKER
what all is under 5 kingdom class?
monera, protista, fungi, plants and animals
what were the main criteria of class that Whittaker used?
it was mode of nutrition, body organisation, reproduction, cell structure, and phylogenetic relationships
which kingdom is divided into 2 in the 6 kingdom classification?
MONERA
what was included under the same plant group and what was the reason?
gymnosperms, angiosperms, bacteria, fungi, mosses, ferns and BGA; CAUSE ALL HAD CELL WALL
earlier what were brought together regardless of having a difference in plant kingdom give two examples
prokaryotic bacteria and BGA ie a eukaryote
unicellular and multicellular organisms like Chlamydomonas and spirogyra were placed to/g in algae
how were fungi diff from plants that Robert gave fungi a diff group of itself
fungi - heterotrophs, have chitin in the cell wall
plants - autotrophs, have a cellulosic cell wall
what kingdom has unicellular eukaryotes and general prokaryotes?
protista and monera resp
what has Protista brought together?
Chlamydomonas, chlorella, paramoecium, and amoeba were all brought under 1 grp
