Intro Flashcards
Anesthesia
Includes: Amnesia
muscle relaxation
narcosis
analgesia
Narcosis
A drug induced state of unconsciousness from which a patient cannot be easily aroused
Analgeia
loss of sensitivity to pain
Local anesthesia
Loss of sensation in a circumscribed body area
Regional anesthesia
loss of sensation in a larger, though limited, body area
Nociception
neural process of encoding noxious stimuli
does not require consciousness
Sedation
state characterized by CNS depression accompanied by drowsiness
The patient is likely unaware of surroundings
mild -> moderate -> profound
Surgical anesthesia
stage/plane of general anesthesia that provides unconsciousness, muscle relaxation and analgesia sufficient for painless surgery
Balanced anesthesia
induced by a multiple drug approach
Inhalation
anesthetic gases or vapors are inhaled in combination with oxygen
Injectable
anesthetics, sedatives, analgesics, etc are injected intravenously, intramuscularly, or subcutaneously
Oral, transmucosal, intranasal
requires no needle or specialized equipment, convenient for owners (analgesics, sedatives)
