Intro Flashcards
What is learning?
The process of change that occurs as a result of an individual’s experience (Mazur 2013)
What are the attributes of learning?
- learning is a process
- change due to learning is long-term not short term
- Learning process may not be directly observable
- experience causes the change
- change in behavior can be desirable or undesirable
What is knowledge?
Information obtained through experience that is stored in the brain
What is performance
Actions demonstrated with the aid of the information obtained through experience stored in the brain
What are the three approaches to studying learning?
- Behavioral Approach
- Cognitive Approach
- Biological/ neuropsychological approach
What does the behavioral approach believe?
It believes learning occurs through stimulus response mechanism
What does the cognitive approach argue?
It argues that organisms form mental/internal representation of stimuli, process it , before exhibiting a changed or unchanged behavior
What does biological/neuropsychological approach focus on?
Focuses on underlying biological basis for learning and memory.
Uses brain imaging techniques and surgical procedures
What are the practical reasons Darwin proposed for using animal for experiments?
- humans evolved from animals
- genetic heritage and history of animals can easily be controlled and manipulated
- Humans can alter behavior in an experiment
- Studying how animals learn can help identify principles that can be applied to human learning
What are some other reasons we use animals for research?
- for the animal sake
- cost
- ethical reasons
