Intrinsic and extrinsic regulation of the heart and vascular system Flashcards
1
Q
describe the Frank-Starling law of the heart in intrinsic regulation
A
- relationship between EDV, contraction strength and SV
- intrinsic mechanism:
- varying degree of stretching of myocardium by EDV
- as EDV increases: myocardium is increasingly stretched, and contracts more forcefully - as ventricles fill, the myocardium stretches
- increases the number of interactions between actin and myosin - allows more force to develop
- explains how the heart can adjust to rise in TPR
2
Q
what is increased contractility caused by
A
caused by sympathetic nerve stimulation
3
Q
what affects regulation of venous return
A
- increases in sympathetic activity
- compression from skeletal muscles
- ventilation
