10 mg IM

10 to 20 minutes to take effect, 3 to 5 hours therapeutic duration.

Can it become to late to give morphine?
Yes, due to the risk of fetal respiratory distress Morphine should not be given if birth is expected within 2 hours.
What are the side effects of Opioids in labour?
- Sedation
- Impaired capacity to engage in decision making
- Euphoria
- Nausea and vomiting - consider antiemetic
- Respiratory depression - for mother and baby
- Delayed gastric emptying
- Low apgar score for baby
- Impact on breastfeeding establishment
Opioids : Pethidine
What is the dose and route of Pethidine in labour?
50 to 100mg IM
Opioids : Pethidine
How long does it take for Morphine to take effect and how long does last?
Onset is 10 to 20 minutes, duration 2 to 5 hours (less duration than morphine)
What are some common opioids used for pain relief in labour?
Morphine
Pethidine
Fentanyl
Nitrous Oxide Gas
What is it?
Nitrous Oxide is mixed at 50% with oxygen for use in labour, it has a sedative ‘amnesic’ effect, NOT an analgesic effect.

What are the side effects?
- Very few side effects
- Absorption through the placenta, cleared quickly
- Has no effect on uterine contractility
Tocolytics - What are two examples?
Nifedipine and Terbutaline
