List common sites of injection
Deltoid (can be quite painful) Vastus lateralis Ventrogluteal Dorsogluteal Rectus femoris (not common)

IM faster acting as more blood supply (deeper site) why needle is thicker and longer
Why does plunger need to be withdraw/aspirated
To make sure needle is not in a blood vessel instead of the muscle
Blood seen then syringe discarded and new one prepared
What is the Z track method and why is it used
Used for large muscles to prevent leakage into subcut tissue
Examples of drugs given in this method are tissue irritating drugs and ones that cause discoloration such as steroids and antipsychotics
Method involves pulling of skin and tissue, then inserting needle at 90 degree angle, then releasing the skin
Describe Frusemide
Commonly known as Lasix
For oedema (swelling) that can be caused by heart failure, renal disease and pulmonary oedema
Diuretic (can increase urination frequency) – not
Dose (adults): 20-40mg IM 1-2 times a day
Can last up to 6 hrs after a dose
