Catherisation Flashcards
Why do allergies have to be checked
Check allergies for latex – silicone catheter would be used instead of a Foley’s catheter
Standard catheter sizes male and female
Female 12Fr-14Fr
Male 16 or 18Fr
Male and female urethra sizes
Male urethra – 20cm
Female urethra- 4 to 6 cm
What does IDC stand for
Indwelling urethral catheter
Why is water used instead of saline to inflate balloon
Saline crystallises and can block the drainage
What do you have to check before inflating balloon
You must see urine in the tubing, if not, then do a supra pubic massage, ask patient to cough, and check catheter is in the right orifice (could go into vagina instead)
Why is ANTT followed
Prevents UTI which is caused by E. coli (microorganism)
When can a urethral catheter not be used
If patient has urethral strictures (narrowing of urethra by scar tissue), tumours and pelvic injuries
Supra-pubic catherisation used instead
What is a trial of void
When nurses measure amount of urine (e.g. in FBC) and then bladder scan to ensure bladder is emptying properly (PVR- post volume residual)
Why may patients need a catheter
Not passing urine
Producing excessive amounts of urine (i.e. diuretic medication)
Unable to get out of bed (i.e. age, heart issues)
