Intramolecular Forces Flashcards
What are intramolecular forces
Forces within molecules that hold each molecule together. Typically called bonds
What is electronegativity
The ability of an atom to attract electrons from another atom
What happens when an element has a high electronegativity
Attract electrons
What happens when an element has a low electronegativity
Give up electrons
What makes an element the most reactive
Having the lowest and highest electronegativity
Define reactive
How readily an atom will ether gain or lose electrons
What creates a strong attraction between atoms
A greater difference in electronegativity
<0.5
Non polar covalent
0.5-1.7
Polar covalent
1.7<
Ionic
What is a nonpolar covalent
Equal sharing of electrons
Difference in electronegativity is less than 0.5
Appears symmetrical
Characteristics of polar covalent
Unequal sharing of electrons
Electrons spend more time on the electronegative atom
Atom with greater electronegativity will be more negatively charged
Appears asymmetrical
Characteristics of ionic
The more electronegative atom steals an electron
Atoms heals together by attraction if opposite charges
Most common between metal and nonmetal
