Intracranial Regulation Flashcards
aka; irreversible coma; permanent condition of complete unawareness of self and the environment and loss of all cognitive functions.
-has the ability to regulate functions (homestasis) sleep-wake cycle, ability to chew, swallow, cough, but can’t interact with environment.
Awake-eyes may wonder, but can’t track an object or individual.
Persistent Vegetative State
client alert & fully aware of environment and intact cognitive abilities, but unable to communicate through speech or movement bc of blocked efferent pathways to brain.
Cause: Infarction or hemorrhage of the pons that disrupts outgoing nerve tracts but spares the RAS is usually cause of locked-in syndrome.
Locked-In Syndrome
cessation or irreersibility of all brain functions, including brainstem. No evidence of cerebral or brainstem function for an extended pd. 6-24 hr. normal body temp and not affected by a depressant drug or alcohol.
- Absent ocular responses to head turning and caloric stimulation
- Flat EEG
- Apena;
