Intracellular + extracellular enzymes Flashcards
What are intracellular enzymes?
Enzymes that have a role within cells
What are extracellular enzymes?
Enzymes that have a role outside the cell
How many enzymes are intracellular?
The majority
How many enzymes are extracellular?
The minority
What are intracellular enzymes often involved in?
Involved in synthesis of polymers + macromolecules so they can be used within the cell
What are extracellular enzymes often involved in?
Involved in hydrolysis of polymers + macromolecules so they can be absorbed into the cell
What are examples of intracellular enzymes?
Phosphorylase, catalase, ATPase
What are examples of extracellular enzymes?
Amylase, maltase, trypsin
What are extracellular enzymes secreted by?
Exocytosis
Why is catalase an intracellular enzymes?
It breaks down hydrogen peroxide (toxic) into macromolecules water + oxygen
Why is amylase an extracellular protein?
It hydrolyses starch to produce maltose
Why is maltase an extracellular protein?
It hydrolyses maltose into glucose, which can then be absorbed into bloodtsream
Why is trypsin an extracellular enzyme?
It hydrolyses proteins to produce dipeptides
These are then hydrolysed by dipeptidase enzymes to produce amino acids, then can be absorbed into bloodstream
