body language

why should you observe body language?
clutching jaw/ shaking and sweating could be a sign of anxiousness or discomfort
why should you observe symmetry of head and neck?
swelling can be a sign of tumour/ cyst/ infection
nerve damage from trauma
what do you look for intra orally?
gingiva colour
gingival contour
gingival margin
suppuration
ulceration
white patches
what do you observe with gingival colour?
pink is normal
red is inflamed
what do you observe with gingival contour?
stippled is normal
loss of stippling is unhealthy
what do you observe with gingival margin?
knife-like edge is healthy
loss of knife-like edge is unhealthy (papillae may over/underfill interdental space)
what do you observe with suppuration?
patient may report bad taste
may be seen as a sinus, exude from beneath gingival margin after probing, or elicited by gentle massaging
what do you observe with ulceration?
raised margin is concern
what may white patches be?
thrush (fungal infection)
candida
pre-malignant
who is susceptible to candida?
immunocompromised
when do you do an extra oral exam?
All new patients
All review patients
When patient reports any changes
When you notice any intra oral/ extra oral changes
where do you stand for an extra oral exam?
directly behind patient
what does extra oral exam check for?
symmetry
lymph nodes
salivary glands
