Interviews Flashcards
What is Unstructured interview?
conversation between the researcher and the participant where the questions are based on the responses given.Usually provide Qualitative data
Strengths of Unstructured Interview?
- Allows room for interpretation is representative of the study if there are any differences we know it is because of individual differences
*can be repeated and high in reliability - Able to build rapports with respondents to gain more valid response
- Higher response rate than questionnaires
Disadvantage of Unstructured interview?
- Difficult to replicate
- Can take time to analyse
- can be researcher bias as questions can be leading could have imposition problem
- Bad for sensetive topics because researcher can’t empathise with respondent as they can ask questions which might be sensitive
- Hawthorne effect because researcher might have empathy on them
What is Structured interview?
conversation face to face between the researcher and the participant where the questions are set in advance or Fixed questions
Advantage of Structured interview?
- Allows to collect quantitative data easy to interrogate high reliability
- Results can be replicated as the answers are to expanded follows an interview schedule that has a rigid set of questions
- High response rate as it is quicker
Disadvantage of Structured interview?
- Cannot have room for interpretation as researcher cannot explain it
- researcher cannot ask to expand
What is Semi-Structured Interview?
where the interviewer does have a list of questions they intend to ask, but they are happy to ask supplementary questions if required or to leave out questions if deemednecessary.
Advantage of Semi-Structured Interview?
- Allows interpretation on questions that need more explanation
- Can be flexible because it can get both quantitative and qualitative data
Disadvantage of Semi-Structured interview?
- Feminsts might be against it as they might beleive there is imposition problem
- You can obtain both data but it will be hard to analyse both
What is Group interviews?
Where the interview involves more than one participant.
Advantages of Group interviews?
- Allows it to be more representative as not only one person is interviewed it will mean e.g. large scale participant are most likely to represent whole class
- Group interviews allow others to get idea from them and obtain rich meaningful data
- Participants more relaxed in a group - more likely to open up
Disadvantage of Group interviews?
- Can’t be accurate because individuals might be influenced by social desirability
- Group might have different opinion which maybe dominated by others
- Data hard to analyse or quantify from group discussion
What are the Practical issues with interview?
- Cost-Training and recruiting interviewers may be expensive especially for Unstructured
- Can be time consuming to gain representative sample and to transcribe and analyse findings
- Skill levels for required interviewer varies depending on the structure of interview e.g. easier for structure interview because given fixed questions whereas unstructured need to ask follow up questions
Ethical issues with interview?
- Their may be social sensitive topic issue however this cause respondent to recall psychologically upsetting memories so developing a rapport is the best way to solve this
- Illegal activities may be disclosed during interviews which present researcher with ethic dilemma because can affect relationship
