What are the features of structured interviews?
Standardised so everyone is asked the same questions in the same way
Often uses closed questions (quantitative data)
Give an advantage of a structured interview.
Easy to deliver and don’t need to establish a rapport between researcher and respondent.
Give a disadvantage of a structured interview.
Data gathered can be superficial and lack depth - respondent may feel unable to fully express their opinion.
What are unstructured interviews?
Reflexive in nature
Gathers qualitative data- interviewer probes/seeks meaning from respondents; Analytical
What are the features semi - structured interviews?
More conversational and dynamic in nature.
Researcher has a set of questions to be answered, but no standardised format to follow.
Give an advantage of a semi - structured interview.
Can gather qualitative and quantitative data.
Flexible questioning.
A disadvantage of interviews is researcher effects. What is meant by this?
Interviewer characteristics (age, sex, manner, personality) may influence the respondent.
Important to predict what characteristics may influence respondent and control them.
