structured interviews - strengths
doesn’t required skilled researcher - just reads out questions and writes down answers
reliable data - every single interview conducted in same way since they’re standardised

invalid - interviewees may misunderstand Qs and researchers cant rephrase
interview bias - PPs lie to present themselves in positive light
unstructured interviews - strengths
interviewer can establish rapport
valid data - if interviewee doesn’t understand, interviewer can rephrase Qs
unstructured interviews - limitations
lacks reliability - questions not standardised and each interview is unique
invalid - social desirability bias
semi-structured interviews - strengths
researcher able to build rapport - valid data
interview still quite formal - less chance of interview bias
semi-structured interviews - limitation
less reliable than structured interview - can’t be replicated in exact same way
group interviews and focus groups - strengths
PPs may feel more comfortable with other and so open up
comments made by one respondent may stimulate thinking of others
group interviews and focus groups - limitations
one or two PPs may dominate discussion preventing others from participating - unrepresentative
peer group pressure - some interviewees may not say what they really think - invalid
