• Useful when depth and detail are required, and less is know about the topic in question, so that issues can be explored

• Can produce qualitative and quantitative statistics, can offer insight as well as data that can be compared between respondents
• Can have advantages of a structured interview, in being replicable and of an unstructured interview, in getting detailed data
