- Set format and questions administer by researcher, might be extra instructions for where to expand on answers
- Useful for gathering quantitative and qualitative data, results can be compared between respondents
- Can be carried out over the phone, internet or face to face
- Strongly planned, more replicable and more likely to have reliable data

- Not in a set format, allows interview to explore areas with further questions arising from respondents answers
- Useful when depth and detail are required, and less is know about the topic in question, so that issues can be explored

- Has set questions which can be explored further by the interviewer
- Can produce qualitative and quantitative statistics, can offer insight as well as data that can be compared between respondents
- Can have advantages of a structured interview, in being replicable and of an unstructured interview, in getting detailed data
