Interview Flashcards
- Can you tell us about your experience with website design and operation?
While I do not have direct experience with website design, I would like to emphasize my willingness to learn because I have a genuine interest in science communication and an interest in the opportunity to contribute to EarthScope Consortium’s goals, specifically the advancement of geophysics research and open access to scientific information. I would also like to highlight my ability to learn quickly, for example, for my MS research I learned how to use an Electron Probe Micro Analyzer and its corresponding software in one day. I am also excited by new learning opportunities and I try to stay up to date on advancements in geology by reading research articles and attending conferences. It’s also important to utilize online resources and tutorials, which is what I relied on when learning how to use thermobarometry models in my research for the first time. I would apply a similar approach to learning about website design and operation
- About Earthscope?
A university consortium (New Mexico Tech) funded by the NSF. Your goals focus on making geophysical research more accessible and easily understood by a wide range of audiences.
- The role requires maintaining dynamic and vibrant content on the website. How would you ensure that the content remains engaging and up-to-date? Can you provide examples of how you have done this in the past?
I believe this requires an array of skills such as content creation, and research & adaptability, all of which I possess. For example, for content and creation, I have strong writing and communication skills along with a strong eye for detail through my experience as a research assistant. I have experience creating scientific posters and presentations with engaging graphics at various geologic conferences. I also have experience preparing scientific articles for publication, for example we are working on publishing my thesis in the Journal of Geology, and I was recently awarded the Outstanding Thesis Award by my department. Ensuring content stays up to date requires research skills and staying updated on scientific advancements and trends which is what I have to do as a Research Assistant and how I approach my writing. I think in terms of keeping the content engaging I would try a multi-media approach if possible, because everyone absorbs information differently, and I think incorporating some interactive features would also be a fun way to learn something new.
- The job involves implementing communication strategies and developing annual communication implementation plans. How would you approach this task? Can you give us an example of a successful communication strategy or plan you have developed in the past?
While my primary responsibility as a research assistant was conducting research, I recognized the importance of effectively communicating our findings to various audiences, specifically when presenting new information. I try to first identify the key objectives and target audiences. I conduct thorough research to understand the needs and interests of different audiences, including researchers, industry professionals, and the general public. By analyzing existing communication channels, such as academic journals, and conferences, I gained insights into the most effective ways to communicate our findings to target audiences. Additionally, I collaborated with team members and researchers to gather and transform complex scientific information into accessible and engaging formats.
Tell me about yourself
I recently completed my Master’s degree in Geology, building upon my Bachelor’s degree in Geological and Environmental Sciences. Throughout my academic journey, I have developed a deep passion for this field, and I am excited about the opportunity to apply my knowledge and skills in a professional setting.
During my Master’s program, I had the privilege of working as a research assistant for my thesis project, which focused on the role of tectonic setting on magma storage and transport. This experience allowed me to hone my analytical and problem-solving skills.
In addition to my academic pursuits, I actively engaged in various fieldwork, laboratory analysis, and data interpretation. These experiences have equipped me with strong technical skills, including mineral chemistry analysis by EPMA, and utilizing and interpreting information from thermobarometry models. My research work required me to collaborate with a diverse team of scientists and present my findings at conferences, enhancing my communication and teamwork abilities.
Beyond my academic achievements, I have a genuine passion for promoting a better understanding of geology and its significance in our world. I believe that effective science communication plays a crucial role in bridging the gap between scientific research and the broader public. This has motivated me to explore science communication avenues, including publishing my own research findings.
I am eager to contribute my skills and knowledge to Earthscope Consortium and make meaningful contributions to the field of geology.
- Why are you interested in this position/our company?
I am highly interested in this position and your company because it aligns perfectly with my educational background, passion for science communication, and the skills I have developed as a research assistant. I am drawn to the opportunity to contribute to maintaining dynamic and vibrant website content, engaging with social media channels, and implementing effective communication strategies. Your company’s commitment to promoting geodetic science and geophysics aligns with my own passion for fostering public understanding of these subjects. I am excited about the idea of utilizing my strong writing skills, creativity, and scientific knowledge to create compelling content and effectively communicate scientific discoveries to diverse audiences. This position offers an ideal platform for me to merge my scientific background with my enthusiasm for communication.
What are your strengths?
I consider independence and adaptability to be two of my key strengths.
Firstly, my independence is reflected in my strong self-motivation and ability to learn quickly. During my research work, I took the initiative to familiarize myself with the necessary concepts and techniques, allowing me to conduct my research with minimal guidance. I was able to meet all project deadlines while maintaining a high level of quality and attention to detail.
Adaptability has been a critical skill that I have developed, especially during unexpected situations. Starting my program during the pandemic presented unique challenges, such as remote learning and limited access to resources. However, I quickly adapted to the virtual environment, actively seeking alternative ways to acquire knowledge, collaborate with peers, and meet program requirements effectively.
Throughout my academic journey, I have embraced change and demonstrated resilience in adapting to new circumstances. This flexibility has enabled me to navigate various research projects, coursework, and even personal challenges while remaining focused and achieving positive outcomes.
What are your weaknesses?
One area I have identified for development is public speaking. While I have gained experience presenting my research findings and participating in academic discussions, I believe there is still room for improvement in my confidence and delivery when addressing larger audiences.
To address this weakness, I have been actively seeking opportunities to enhance my public speaking skills. I have taken courses and workshops specifically designed to improve presentation techniques and develop effective communication strategies. Additionally, I have sought opportunities to practice public speaking through participating in seminars, conferences, and other speaking engagements.
Moreover, I believe that preparation is key to overcoming this weakness. I invest significant time and effort in researching and preparing my presentations to ensure that I am well-versed in the topic and confident in delivering the content. By practicing and seeking feedback from peers and mentors, I have been able to gradually build my confidence and improve my ability to engage and captivate an audience.
- Tell me about a difficult time
There was a time when my research findings were not aligning with my initial hypotheses, and I discovered that I had made a mistake in the data analysis process. Instead of becoming discouraged, I embraced the challenge as an opportunity for growth. I reevaluated my methods, consulted with my research advisor, and diligently worked to rectify the error in a timely manner. This experience taught me the importance of attention to detail, meticulousness in data analysis, and the value of perseverance in the face of setbacks. Through my efforts, I was able to rectify the mistake, adjust my approach, and ultimately produce accurate and meaningful research findings.
