Floodplains & Salmon Flashcards
Introduction
Hello everyone. Welcome. Today, we’re going to dive into the fascinating world of salmon, exploring their lifecycle, and the crucial role floodplains play in their journey.
Salmon Lifecycle
Let’s start with the incredible journey of salmon. Imagine a cold water tributary or river in Northern CA where salmon hatch from their eggs in graveled nests. These tiny, resilient creatures spend their early days growing, feeding, and adapting to their freshwater environment.
Salmon Lifecycle 2 (ocean)
As these young salmon grow, they embark on an adventurous downstream journey. They travel through the Delta, out of the SF Bay, and into the ocean. It’s a journey that can last 1-4 years!
Salmon Lifecycle 3 (adult)
After their journey to the ocean, adult salmon return to their birthplace. Back in the freshwater stream where they hatched, the females create nests called redds, where they carefully deposit their eggs. The males then swim over to fertilize them, ensuring the continuity of the salmon cycle.
Floodplain intro
Now let’s focus on floodplains. A floodplain is the low lying land next to a river that may flood during heavy rain. It’s sort of like a river’s safety valve. Floodplains can support rich ecosystems, both in quantity and diversity. For ex., a floodplain can contain 100-1,000X as many species as a river! Here, microscopic organisms thrive, making it a perfect place to feed for birds and fish.
Floodplains & salmon
Floodplains were historically common across the Central Valley, and offer a stark contrast to the channelized rivers we see today. Floodplains are shallow, murky, and slow-moving, providing the ideal env. for juvenile salmon. With abundant food and fewer predators, floodplains offer the perfect place to grow for salmon.
Dos Rios Ranch State Park
Dos Rios Ranch State Park has taken steps to restore the floodplain, creating a haven for young salmon. The floodplain supplies dense concentrations of zooplankton (teeny tiny invertebrates) - which are a vital food source for juvenile salmon. Here, the salmon grow big and strong - improving their chances of a successful migration to the ocean and eventual return.
Outro
As we marvel at the resilience and intricacies of the salmon life cycle, let’s also reflect on the importance of preserving and restoring natural habitats like floodplains. We all play a role in safeguarding these environments, ensuring the continued success of this incredible journey that salmon undertake. Thank you!
