Furthering Close/Open Ended Questions Clarifying and Paraphrasing Summarizing Active Listening

furthering
Depending on the timing or information the worker is seeking to elicit from the client, one of these types of questions may be used. How old are you? will typically elicit a short answer. How are you feelings about school will allow for longer, more-involved responses.
close/open ended questions
this is when workers ask clients for clarification to ensure they understand the clients message. When paraphrasing workers should convey the message back to the client to ensure understanding of the clients meaning
clarifying and paraphrasing
this is similar to paraphrasing but includes more information. it’s frequently used to help focus the session and allow the worker to summarize the overall messages, problems or goals of the client.
summarizing
using facial expressions, body language and postures to show the worker is engaged and listening to the client. workers should display eye contact and natural but engaged body movements and gestures. As with all communication techniques, social workers should be aware of cultural differences in what is appropriate, esp related to direct eye contact and posturing

engagement and assessment
this stage consists of the client and worker collaborating to identify goals to be accomplished. plan of care/treatment is developed and the contract is implemented
goal identification and intervention planning
the caseworker implements selected interventions and tasks. the client works towards identified goals. during this stage, the plan is frequently reviewed by the worker in collaboration with the client to assess progress toward goals. adjustments are made by either party if necessary.
implementation
the sowkr should begin the termination phase at the onset of services, since the client may abruptly terminate services for various reasons. it is within best practice for both the social worker and the client to be prepared for termination. the social worker should inform the client about the termination guidelines once services begin.
