Interventional procedures Flashcards
Abscess drainage
Done on pts with a infection fluid collection not responding to antibiotic treatment.
Cyst aspiration
Done for symptom relief & eliminate mammographic masses. Done on cystic lesions that have thick walls. Fluid eval only if suspicious.
FNA
After local anesthetic used a fine needle (18-25 gauge) used to aspirate cell, Multiple passes may be needed. CELL sample used to provide bedside sampling. Done on irregular lymph nodes. Results in 1-2 hrs. Can have false (-) due to small sample size.
US core biopsy
Done for solid lesions/lesions near chest wall. Uses 14-16 gauge to take a TISSUE sample. Uses US to guide. Passes 3-5 times. Risk of bleeding infection is higher. Results in 24 hrs
VAAB
Done on solid lesions with other suspicious features. 7-14 gauge automated sampling system. Needle enters lesion once, sampling notch rotates. Most common type of image guided bio.
Wire loc
Placement of needle wire for pre op guidance that will locate: breast cancer/high risk lesion. Wire is used to guide surgeon to mass. During surgery surgeon will take wire out with mass. Specimen taken to xray. Cc/ml/mlo taken.
Seed placement
Wire free breast loc. size of a grain of rice. Do CC, ML. Axilla AT, AP shoulder
Stereotactic biopsy
Done on a nonpalpable lesion. Used to determine exact location. Uses angled images to traingualte depth of lesion & calculate position in 3D. Tube angled 15 deg. To left & right.
