Q

What are the primary interview skills? (1 + 2)

A

(Berman & Shopland, 2005)

  1. Attending Behavior
    * Verbal/nonverbal behavior showing the therapist
    listening and trying to understand
——Verbal bx –> rate of speech, intonation, sighs, etc.
——Nonverbal bx –> eye contact, body orientation, facial expressions, careful pauses, etc.
————Therapist nonverbally reflecting the client’s emotions may help identify their emotions –> nonverbal mirroring
——(Client’s?) Congruency of verbal + nonverbal = more trust in therapist
  2. Empathetic comments
—Attempt to tell client their perspective is understood and valued
    —Give emotional support and validation
