What are the intervals you must identify?
. Perfect Unison . Minor 2nd . Major 2nd . Minor 3rd . Major 3rd . Perfect 4th . Tritone* . Perfect 5th . Minor 6th . Major 6th . Minor 7th . Major 7th . Perfect Octave
- only identified aurally as a diminished 5th and augmented 4th is the same. All written intervals must be identified with proper names.
What do you need to remember about perfect and major intervals?
Diminished ⬅️ Minor ⬅️ Major ➡️ Augmented
Diminished ⬅️ Perfect ➡️ Augmented
What do you do when you have to find an interval below a given note?
Don’t change the given note! Work out what the starting note would be in order for the given note to complete the stated interval.
Eg. Given note: Eb (find the perfect 5th below)
The answer would be Ab.
What tunes help you recognise a perfect unison?
It’s the same note, come on you can recognise that.
What tunes help you recognise a minor second?
Ascending - theme from ‘jaws’
Descending - ‘joy to the world, the lord has come’ or Fur Elise
What tunes help you recognise a major second?
Ascending - ‘Fre re jacque’ or ‘happy birthday to you’
Descending - ‘three blind mice’ or ‘Mary had a little lamb’

Ascending - smoke on the water
Descending - out of the blue, US national anthem
