Intertebrate Flashcards
Invertebrate
an animal that does not have a backbone
Vertebrate
possession of a backbone
Consumer
An organism that generally obtains food by feeding on other organisms or organic matter due to lack of the ability to manufacture own food from inorganic sources
Ganglion
a mass of nerve cells
Gut
the digestive tract
Coelom
a body cavity that contains the internal organs
Bilateral Symmetry
the property of being divisible into symmetrical halves on either side of a unique plane..
Radial Symmetry
symmetry around a central axis, as in a starfish or a tulip flower..
Asymmetry
Although the parts in a dividing plane or around an axis are not exactly the same, there is a significant correspondence in form, size, distribution, or arrangement of parts. Symmetry is observed particularly with regard to the external appearance of organisms. Bilateral organisms exhibit similarities between left and right sides.
Sponges
Sponges are the basalmost clade of animals of the phylum
Cnidarians
.Cnidaria is a phylum containing over 10,000 species of animals found exclusively in aquatic environments: they are predominantly marine species. Their distinguishing feature is cnidocytes, specialized cells that they use mainly for capturing prey
Flatworms
and have no specialized circulatory and respiratory organs, which restricts them to having flattened shapes that allow oxygen and nutrients to pass through their bodies by diffusion..
Roundworms
.They are a diverse animal phylum inhabiting a broad range of environments.
Mollusks
The molluscs compose the large phylum of invertebrate animals known as the Mollusca.
Open circulatory system
Vertebrates, and a few invertebrates, have a closed circulatory system. Closed circulatory systems have the blood closed at all times within vessels of different size and wall thickness. In this type of system, blood is pumped by a heart through vessels, and does not normally fill body cavities.
