Q

Explain how a lack of vitamin c hinders the absorption of iron

A

Most of the iron in food is in a ferric state which cannot be absorbed by the body and so vitamin c is required to turn the iron into a ferrous state.

9
Q

Explain the interrelationship of calcium, phosphorus and vitamin D

A

Calcium and phosphorus are both needed for the formation and maintenance of strong bones and teeth as together they form calcium phosphate which gives bones and teeth their strength.
Vitamin d is required to help the body absorb the calcium in our food.

Q

Explain the interrelationship of the ACE vitamins

A

Vitamin E improves vitamin As role within the body.
Once vitamin E has been used up by the body, Vitamin C can recycle it so it can be used again.

Together they make up the antioxidants which destroy free radicals reducing the risk of cancer and heart disease.

Q

Explain the interrelationship of iron, vitamin c and folic acid.

A

Vitamin c changes iron from its ferric state to its ferrous state so that it can be absorbed by the body.
Folic acid can help produce red blood cells so if iron is lacking in the body then folic acid can take over to help prevent anaemia.

Q

Explain the interrelationship of water and NSP

A

NSP absorbs water in the gut making the water matter soft helping it pass out of the body more easily.
If NSP is lacking in the waste matter then water cannot be absorbed making the waste matter difficult to pass.
