Why is the Profesisonal conduct ethic important?
behaving with integrity, being reliable and honest as these aspects are a reflection of others in the profession.
Why is the confidentiality ethic important?
Keeping everything private develops trust in Interpreters & the profession
What are the 2 exceptions to confidentiality ethic?
Public events, although some level of confidentiality can remain
Duty of care issues.
Why is the competence ethic important?
So their level of interpreting is appropriate for the job.
Presenting credentials and experience honestly.
What is the exception to the competence ethic?
When you have a LOTE where there is a lack of experienced interpreters of the same LOTE available.
e.g. trilingual have more pressure than bilinguals and may take on higher risk jobs because of a lack of experienced interpreters of the same LOTE.
Why is the accuracy ethic important?
It means the clients can be confident they are being interpreted correctly.
Remain faithful to the meaning of the messages, without distortions, and the content and intention are preserved.
Why is the impartiality ethic important?
so there is no bias, the interpreter should be neutral when working.
Do not give opinions or share their own feelings, or add their own feelings/opinions on top of the message conveyed.
Why is it important to have clarity of role boundaries?
To ensure the interpreting is of a high standard, and uninfluenced by other roles.
What is a complication with clarity of role boundaries?
Where you hold multiple ‘hats’ within the same company- interpreter, employee, employer.
Where you work in a small LOTE community, so some clients may be friends or people you socialise with.
Why is professional development important?
To maintain the quality of skills & improve.

attending conferences, workshops, reading new literature on the community, interpreting.
