Exposition
“Explanation.” Fiction: First stage in plot. The expression of authors thoughts, theories and ideas in non-fiction.

Expressions that use similes and metaphors to convey meaning
Metephorical
non-literal meaning. Refers to a different thing rather than itself.
Symbolic:
Representing something beyond its literal meaning.
Skimming:
Not read word-for-word. Determines general meaning.
Skanning
Not read word-for-word. Picks out certain bits of information
paraphrase:
Restate the text in different words
Summarize
To condense a text to convey original points and structure in abbreviated form.

Expository
Nonfiction Category. Conveys information and can be organized for a number of purposes
Descriptive
Nonfiction Category. Uses vivid details
Narrative:
Nonfiction Category. Recounts a story or persona experience.
Persuasive
Nonfiction Category. Attempts to change the opinion of the audience and encourages them to take action.
Four categories of nonfiction
Expository, Descriptive, Narrative and Persuasive.

Author uses patterns of facts to make predictions
Classification
Author groups items into organized categories
Definition
Author defines term using facts, examples and anecdotes.
Inferences
An educated guess based on evidence or one’s own background knowledge
