what is social psychology?
social psychology studies how we think about, influence, and relate to one another
what is the frustration-aggression hypothesis?
animals aggress when their goals are frustrated (humans included)
example of the frustration-aggression hypothesis?
being cut off on the road - road range
do frustrated goals cause aggession?
no, they result in feeling bad
what influences aggression?
gender, socialization, testosterone, threats to status or dominance, and culture

what is cooperation?
behavior of two or more individuals that leads to mutual benefit
example of the prisoner’s dilemma found in game theory?
get caught cheating. both rat each other out = F’s. both refuse to rat = D’s and retake class. you rat and other doesn’t = you get A. they rat and you don’t = you get F
what is prejudice?
an evaluation of a person based solely on their group membership

stage 1:split group into 2 groups
stage 2:competition against each other. results: in-group favoritism, out-group competition
stage 3: problem-solving exercises to end prejudice
what is social loafing?
tendency to put forth less effort when part of a group
what is deindividuation?
loss of self-awareness and self-restraint in group situations. (concert)
what is the bystander effect?
tendency for any given bystander to be less likely to give aid if other bystanders are present
what is diffusion of responsibility? (bystander effect)
observers assume someone else is going to intervene, feel less responsible to do anything
