What is FTP?
A
File transfer protocol, an application level protocol used to transfer data across a network.

How does access work for FTP?
A
- usernames and passwords can be used to protect access to files and to identify users
- Access can be provided anonymously where any user can access the FTP site

What is a mail server?
A
- Dedicated computers that are responsible for storing email, providing access to clients and services to send emails.
- Acts as a virtual postal office for all incoming/outgoing emails
- Route mail according to its database of local network user’s email addresses as it arrives and leaves, and stores it until it can be retrieved

What is STMP?
A
Simple mail transfer protocol
• Used to transfer outgoing emails between mail servers to their destination or from an email client to the server when sending an email

How does POP3 work?
A
- Downloads emails stored on a remote server to a local client
- Responsible for retrieving emails form a mail server that temporarily stores your incoming mail
- When emails are retrieved they are transferred to your local computer, and deleted from the server

What is a disadvantage of POP3?
A
Emails are deleted, if you are using different devices to access email via POP3 they will not be synchronised on each device.

What is IMAP?
A
- Email protocol that is designed to keep emails on the server, thus maintaining synchronicity between devices.
- Multiple clients can access the same email account in synchronicity
- Holds mail on the server
