what is access to law?
A
having access means equal opportunity for all people to make use of
the legal system
if some can’t access the law, then they are discriminated against and thus denied justice

what limits ones access to the law?
A
- cost;
legal costs charged by lawyers/barristers are very high
- time
trials are lengthy/too difficult
“justice delayed is justice denied”
- distance
range of places needed to go to access law; lawyers office, police station, courthouses
- procedures
with limited knowledge of law, may not even know your rights
court procedures can be intimidating
- languages
legal terminology is confusing, especially if English isn’t a first language
- being indigenous
indigenous incarceration rates are unreasonably high, can be intimidating
