What was policy of appeasement ?
1) The policy of making concessions to the dictatorial powers in order to avoid conflict, governed Anglo-French foreign policy during the 1930s.
2) associated with Conservative Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain.
Why British appeasement policy was adopted ?
1) strong public and political desire to achieve ‘peace at any price’.
2) Horror of WW1 “ War to end all wars”
3) neither country was militarily ready for war.

5) Many British Politicians thought that demands of dictators were justified.
6) Many British politicians believed that Germany had genuine grievances resulting from Versailles. “Too harsh”

USA reaction
1) Isolationism after WW1.

USSR response
1) wanted to pursue “Popular front” against fascism.
2) Joined league of nations in 1934
3) the USSR was the only country to propose sanctions in League for Hitler re-militarizing Rhineland.
Germany withdrew from league in 1933
1) Britain proposed Germany should be allowed to have an army of 200,000
2) it should be allowed to have an air force half the size of French air force.
Germany military expenditure
Increased from 2.7 billion marks in 1933 to 8 billion marks in 1935.
