International Policy Flashcards
What was the notable climate change agreement of 1992?
The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) ‘Rio Earth Summit’ agreement of 1992
How does the UNFCCC work?
Assesses progress
Develops mechanisms for implementation
Develops new protocols
Agrees on new steps
What IPCC body works out how many emissions countries are releasing and calculates emissions globally?
Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI)
What are two flexible Kyoto mechanisms?
Emissions Trading
Clean Development Mechanism
How does emissions trading work?
Cap and trade mechanisms ‘caps’ the total amount of GHGs from factories. Encouraging emissions reductions, unused carbon credits can be sold to those who are less efficient.
What is the clean development mechanism?
Emissions reduction projects in poor countries earns certified emission reduction credits.
An example of this would be to re-forest in poor countries.
What is an example of a clean development mechanism project?
Reducing methane emissions from landfills in Rio, Brazil by 31,000 tonnes each year.
What temperature change did the Paris agreement agree on to be below?
2c
UNFCCC COPs stands for what?
The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Conference of Parties
Who are the UNFCCC COPs ?
Alliance of Small Island States G77 and China EU Environmental Integrity Group (EIG) LDCs Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) Umbrella Group
What do AOSIS want?
Pushing for sub 1.5c change. ‘1.5 to stay alive’
What do G77 and China want?
Will only cut emissions if developed countries lead the way. They want to be allowed to develop and don’t want holding back
What do OPEC want?
Compensation for not being able to export petrol
What do the umbrella group want?
Pushing for voluntary measures… Argue it is unfair for developed countries to make the largest emissions reductions.
