Why are functionalists like or not like realists?
Rather than self-interest of nation-states that realists see as a motivating factor, functionalists focus on common interests and needs shared by states (but also non-state actors) in a process of global integration triggered by the erosion of state sovereignty and the increasing weight of knowledge and hence of scientists and experts in the process of policy-making.
What is functionalism?
A strong concern about the obsolescence of the State as a form of social organization.
What is the United States of Europe?
Hypothetical name given to Europe if all the countries were to become states of one European nation.
What is the Maastricht Treaty? What did it do?
Treaty for the EU (TEU). Created the modern EU and later the euro.
What is a customs union?
Type of trade bloc which is composed of a free trade area with a common external tariff.
What do customs unions have to do with the EU?
The EU has these to increase economic efficiency and establishing closer political and cultural ties between member countries.
What is the common agricultural policy?
Agricultural policy implemented by the EU, implementing a system of agricultural subsides and other programs.
What is the significance of the common agricultural policy on IR?
Very criticized for its cost and its environmental and humanitarian impacts.
What is the democratic deficit?
An idea that the governance of the European Union i some way lacks democratic legitimacy.
What did the democratic deficit do?
Led to an elected European Parliament given power to approve or reject the EU’s legislation.
