What is the UDHR used for?
What is the ECHR?
The European Convention on Human Rights was written by the council of Europe and adopted by its 47 member states.
What was established to uphold the ECHR?
The European court of human rights
What happened with the ECHR in the UK?
The human rights act of 1998 made the ECHR part of UK law.
Why are the UDHR and the ECHR controversial?
- Some believe that it impacts a countries sovereignty.
- Criticism the human rights are very Western and are not applicable to Islamic or Asian cultures.
What is the purpose of the Geneva Convention?
A set of international laws to try and regulate war. Aims to protect peoples rights during conflicts.
What does the convention ban?
- Terrorism
- Torture
- Taking hostages
- Sexual assault
- Says wounded soliders should be evacuated
How many countries signed the Geneva Convention?
