International Handbook of Threat Assessment Flashcards
Threat
is inherently dynamic, changing over time and contextual
Assessment
is generally the process of gathering information for use in making a decision
Management
is the process of acting to gain or maintain control of a situation
Affective violence
sometimes referred to as reactive , impulsive or emotional violence is preceded by autonomic arousal caused by reactions to a perceived threat
Predatory Violence (Instrument/Premeditated Violence
is characterized by the absence of autonomic arousal and emotions
Threat assessments
typically occurs in an operational context and violence risk assessments is usually done judicial context conducted by mental health, corrections, and social service professionals
An Idiographic (Case- Driven) Approach
Threat assessment is an idiographic or case driven approach, whereas violence risk assessment is a nomothetic or group data approach
Base Rate
The frequency of a behavior in a particular group while controlling for time
base rates allow for actuarial predictions of risk but must be sufficiently high to minimize the risk of false positives
Targeted Violence
a term coined by Fein and Vossekull
Actuarial
will usually express the risk of general violence as a quantitative estimate, whereas Structure Professional Judgment will communicate the risk through the use of an adjective such as low, moderate or high
Threat assessment is limited
to predatory or instrumental violence, given the nature of the task: an implied pathway (calhoun & Weston)
Calhoun & Weston
identified six pathways to violence
Gavin De Becker
developed his MOSIAC for assessing violence risk in various settings
WAVR -21
is designed to consider target and contextual factors and also change over time in the risk behavior of a person of concern
Stalking Assessment and Management
was introduced by Kropp, Hart, & Lyon
