EXPLAIN

A

UNICEF attempts to reduce extreme poverty by focussing on children and their mothers. It does this mainly through education and health services. Education is viewed as an important method to improve development of African nations because it is the best way to lift families out of poverty, improve their futures and educate about HIV and AIDS. Millions of children and mothers in Africa have directly benefited from the work of UNICEF. They are active in more than 190 countries, 45 of which are African countries.

ANALYSIS

A

By focussing on mothers and children, mostly through education and health services, UNICEF will help to reduce poverty in a number of ways. By prioritising education services, UNICEF attempts to ensure more children can access education. This means that children in developing countries can gain qualifications and secure a job in the future. By entering the workplace as adults, they can contribute to the economy and earn money to support themselves and their families, leading to the chances of them living in poverty being reduced.

EVALUATION

A

due to financial constraints, the UN has been cutting back projects for over a decade and UNICEF relies on funding to effectively meet its aims. UNICEF has also received criticism for failing to tackle the issue of violence against children, which directly impacts on their likelihood of attending school. Africa’ enrolment in education levels remain the lowest in the world, with Chad only seeing 14.1% of girls and 24.2% of boys completing a lower secondary education. Furthermore, the war in Sudan has created 2 million refugees who have fled their homes, which has led to a 20% increase in adult illiteracy as education is disrupted

Q

EXPLAIN

A

Organisations like the WHO are very effective because they are recognised by most countries as the key lead on tackling problems related to disease. Poor health is a significant factor that causes poverty in developing countries as without a healthy working age population it can be hard to generate income needed for further development. The WHO works to meet the medical needs and improve the health of people in developing countries. The WHO trains local people to become nurses and health care workers in their own country. The organisation also works to eliminate diseases such as Malaria and invest in HIV prevention

Q

ANALYSIS

A

By training medical professionals, offering vaccination programmes and investing money when healthcare emergencies occur, the work of the WHO also lessens the chances of the poverty cycle continuing. With citizens healthier, they are more likely to be able to secure a job and enter the workforce. This will lead to a form of regular income, with which they can provide food, water and shelter, this in turn will reduce the likelihood of ill health, thus helping to break the cycle of poverty

Q

EVALUATION

A

in the past, the WHO has set itself ambitious targets to eradicate diseases such as Malaria, HIV and other infections yet there remain millions of people infected and dying needlessly from these diseases. The WHO have also been criticised for their response to the Covid-19 pandemic with some saying that it should have declared a global emergency earlier than it did - with more than 3.3 million people around the world now having died of Covid-19. Therefore, the WHO may be helping to tackle poverty in the long run, but there are still many diseases it has not managed to tackle

EXPLAIN

A

The WFP is the largest humanitarian agency, fighting hunger worldwide, and responding to emergencies, aiming to save lives by getting food to the hungry fast. It also works to prevent hunger through programmes that use food as a basis for building assets, spreading knowledge, and encouraging stronger communities that are more food secure

Q

wfp
ANALYSIS

A

WFP looks to provide deprived communities with the knowledge on how to make food an asset which can earn the money. This will lead to less poverty as it allows families and communities to produce food which they can eat as well as sell on for a profit. This will lead to an increase in income and the ability to provide for their family. Regular meals will also lead to better health and the WFP also encourages the education of young girls. Education and better health also leads to improved life chances and a reduction in poverty levels

17
Q

wfp
EVALUATION

A

the WFP has been plagued with problems such as fraud and corruption in some of the countries they have been assisting. The WFP is in the midst of a crippling and historic funding crisis that is forcing the organisation to scale back life-saving assistance at a time when acute hunger is at record levels. Almost half of WFP country operations have already cut the size and scope of food, cash, and nutrition assistance because of a major drop in funding. Therefore, this shows that aid alone cannot fully reduce the issue of poverty in developing countries as corruption is still a problem and the effectiveness of aid relies on how well it is managed by the government of the recipient country.

Q

The effectiveness of aid is also dependent on receiving an acceptable amount of funding

19
Q

POINT

A

A final international organisation is the FAO

20
Q

fao
EXPLAIN

A

The FAO aims to promote development in Africa through tackling hunger. They do this by raising awareness amongst rural communities as to how best to manage land and water suppliers and increase food production. It is concerned with increasing food amounts and quality which people in developing countries receive. It works with local farmers to try to improve the methods they use, introduce new farming techniques, and teach them about the benefits of using fertilisers and irrigation. Development is helped as farmers grow enough for people to eat but also any extra grown can be traded

21
Q

fao
EXAMPLE

A

the FAO has offices in over 130 countries, employing over 11,561 staff members. With help from FAO, the poverty levels of entire developing countries can be lowered

22
Q

fao
ANALYSIS

A

The FAO targets vulnerable households and supplies them with seeds and technology needed to successfully farm. For individuals, families, and even whole communities able to produce their own food and be secure in the knowledge they could cope in extreme weather conditions, such as droughts, they will be able to maintain a healthier diet throughout their lives. Parents will be able to provide for their children and give them a better start to life than they experienced. Whole communities will have access to food, and the poverty cycle can come to an end, as with more food, people will be healthier and able to attend school and work, which can lead to more income being secured

22
Q

fao
EVALUATION

A

the FAO has been accused of being too centralised. Most of the staff and offices are in New York, meaning they are far removed from the complex problems experienced in the field. An October 2023 Guardian investigation exposed how pressure from the meat industry led to the FAO diluting reports and suppressing evidence of livestock’s impact on the climate emergency. The FAO has also been criticised by the EU after they delayed an independent review of its management. Therefore, although the FAO is doing all it can to tackle food production, there are many long-term causes of poverty in developing countries that the FAO cannot solve e.g. natural disasters.

INTRO

A

With 1.1 billion people in poverty, it is important to discuss the effectiveness of the responses made by international organisations, with this essay focusing on how successful the UN and multi-lateral aid have been. This essay will explore the effectiveness of UNICEF, the World Health Organisation (WHO), Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and World Food Programme (WFP). Overall, this essay will argue that international organisations, specifically the UN, have been effective in tackling the issue of poverty in the developing world to a certain exten

22
Q

CONC

A

Overall, this essay has argued that international organisations, specifically the UN and the 4 sub-organisations of UNICEF, the WHO, FAO and WFP, have been effective at tackling poverty in the developing world to an extent. The organisation that has had the most significant impact is UNICEF. By focusing on children’s education, more children can gain qualifications and enter the workforce which contributes positively to the economy and reduces the risk of their own children being born into poverty. However, the organisation that has had the least significant impact is the WFP, who are in the midst of a crippling and historic funding crisis that is forcing the organisation to scale back life-saving assistance at a time when acute hunger is at record levels. With the impact of global conflicts such as Russia-Ukraine and Israel-Palestine, it is predicted that underdevelopment will continue to increase on a global scale as people are seeing their homes and families destroyed.
