Governments Flashcards
governments - lack of taxes being paid
POINT
One effect of poverty on governments is a lack of taxes being paid
governments - lack of taxes being paid
EXPLAIN
If these governments do not have these essentials then it will also be very difficult for the countries to develop and create wealth that the government can tax, meaning that, like the citizens of the country, the government is often trapped in a poverty related cycle
governments - lack of taxes being paid
EXAMPLE
according to the UN the governments of Africa have been unable to provide safe drinking water and electricity to millions of people of Africa partially as a result of a lack of taxes being paid.
governments - lack of taxes being paid
ANALYSIS
The high levels of poverty that people experience due to a lack of development in their country also costs governments vital tax revenues needed. Underdevelopment means the populations of such countries will struggle to provide the tax base the government will need to make the investments vital to developing the country they are responsible for.
governments - lack of taxes being paid
EVALUATION
the UN Tax Committee works to strengthen international cooperation on tax matters, with a special focus on the needs and capacities of developing countries. The UN Tax Committee works to generate practical guidance for governments in order to strengthen tax systems for sustainable development.

LINK TO Q
This shows that while governments need tax to be able to further develop their country, there are international organisations working to improve the opportunities allowed to developing countries specifically in relation to tax systems.
governments - lack of teachers
POINT
A further effect on governments is a lack of teachers
governments - lack of teachers
EXPLAIN
Underdevelopment means governments are unable to recruit the quality teachers that they need. The quality of life in the developing world can be poor, and as governments are unable to both provide the right educational facilities it is also unable to pay the wages needed for educated and skilled people to become and stay as teachers.
governments - lack of teachers
ANALYSIS
The consequences of this is that the government will be unable to recruit the teaching staff needed for development. Without teachers to encourage and teach the next generations, all aspects of society and government will be further impacted, and the future development of the country will be severely affected. This will lead to even more people falling into the poverty cycle.
governments - lack of teachers
EXAMPLE
a study in Rwanda found that high rates of turnover led to 21% of teachers teaching in subjects for which they had no training.
governments - lack of teachers
EVALUATION
UNICEF helps to train new teachers to allow them to go on to help children access a proper education. The work done by UNICEF aims to target teachers who require further training and support, and to give them the tools needed to teach confidently.

LINK TO Q
This shows the important role of teachers within developing countries, and how a lack of teachers can have far-reaching consequences for the development of a country.
wider international community - much poorer overall
POINT
One effect of poverty on the wider international community is that it becomes much poorer overall
wider international community - much poorer overall
EXPLAIN
The problems faced by developing countries and the high number of potential consumers who remain trapped in poverty means the developed world is missing out on billions in sales while having to spend billions on aid.
wider international community - much poorer overall
EXAMPLE
most of the world’s population live in the developing world and according to the World Bank 700 million people in 2021 live on less than $1.90 a day
wider international community - much poorer overall
ANALYSIS
As a consequence of so many in the developing world living on so little money per day, the developed world will never be able to sell luxury goods or services to these people or countries, therefore impact hugely on the economy. This will impact poverty levels everywhere.
wider international community - much poorer overall
EVALUATION
ending poverty in all its forms is the first of the 17 sustainable development goals. To do this, the UN wants to ensure there is the significant mobilisation of resources to help developing countries to put programmes and policies into place to help end poverty in all its forms.
wider international community - much poorer overall
LINK TO Q

wider international community - attracts key workers
POINT
A further effect of poverty on the international community is that it attracts key workers from poorer countries, which can be considered a positive effect
wider international community - attracts key workers
EXPLAIN
When considering the situation in many developing countries, with greater risks of conflict, poverty, gender inequality, hunger and more, the international community is able to attract those that do manage to get a good education with the promise of a better life
wider international community - attracts key workers
EXAMPLE
according to the independent, around 15% of current NHS doctors come from Asia alone
wider international community - attracts key workers
ANALYSIS
Therefore, countries like the UK are in a situation where global poverty is something that they can benefit from as they attract key workers from countries that will inevitably suffer more without them. This will lead to extremely contrasting positive effects on developed countries and severely negative effects on developing countries already struggling with escaping the cycle of poverty
