Internal Surfaces of the Body Flashcards
Describe the structural relationships between the epithelia and closely associated tissues (glands, underlying connective tissue and muscularis mucosae) comprising GI, urinary and respiratory mucosae
Gut:
Mucosa, submucosa, muscularis externae, serosa
Mucosa - epithelia, connective tissue, muscularis mucosae
Submucosa - glands, arteries, veins, nerves
Muscularis externae - outer longitudinal, inner circular
Respiratory:
Mucosa, submucosa, muscularis externa, adventitia
Explain mucous and serous membranes
Mucous membranes - line certain internal tubes which open to the exterior e.g. alimentary, respiratory, urinary
Consists of epithelium, connective tissue (lamina propria), muscularis mucosae in alimentary
Serous membranes - line certain closed body cavities e.g. peritoneum, pleural, pericardium and secrete a lubricating fluid
Consists of mesothelium that secretes a watery lubricating fluid, connective tissue
Visceral - inner, parietal - outer
