Explain why electron microscopes are capable of finer resolution than light microscopes
Resolution increases as wavelength decreases
Theoretical limit of resolution for light = 0.2um, for electrons = 0.002nm
Define the term ‘limit of resolution’
The minimum distance at which two objects can be distinguished
State how a cell functions by describing the structure and function of the following cell components and organelles: membranes (bilipid), plasma membrane, glycocalyx, nucleus, heterochromatin, euchromatin, nucleus, nuclear envelope, SER, RER, ribosomes, Golgi, vesicles, lysosomes, peroxisomes, mitochondria, cytoskeleton
Plasma membrane - amphiphatic, selective permeability
Glycocalyx - oligosaccharide and polysaccharide side chains on outside of plasma membrane
RER - ribosomes, SER - lipid biosynthesis, steroidogenesis
Golgi - modify, sort, concentrate and package proteins
Lysosomes - contain hydrolytic enzymes
Peroxisomes - detoxifies alcohol, phenols, formaldehyde
Mitochondria - sites of a cell’s energy production
Cytoskeleton - form tough supportive meshwork, move structures,
