Internal Structure of the Kidneys Flashcards
what does the cortex do?
the cortex filters blood and removes unwanted substances out of the body
what does the medulla do?
the medulla is where the amount of salt and water in your urine is controlled
what does the renal papilla do?
the renal papilla is the tip of each pyramid; it empties urine into the minor calyx in the kidney
what does the minor calyx do?
urine drains from the renal papilla into the minor calyces
what does the major calyx do?
urine passes through the major calyces into the ureter
what does the pelvis do?
the pelvis is where urine collects
what does the ureter do?
the ureter transports urine from the kidney to the bladder
what does the renal vein do?
the renal vein carries blood with low urea content out of the kidney
what does the renal artery do?
the renal artery carries blood with high urea content into the kidney
what does the hilum do?
the hilum is where structures such as the renal veins and arteries are located
what does the renal pyramid do?
the renal pyramid transports urine from the cortex to the calyces
what does the renal capsule do?
the renal capsule protects the kidney and prevents infections in the surrounding area of the kidney
