Internal- Streaming Flashcards
What is streaming??
It refers to splitting pupils into groups based on ability, which they stay in across all of their subjects.
Once streamed, what is it hard to do?
Move streams. Pupils are locked into teachers expectations and get the message their teachers have written them off as no hopers:
Who identified the A-C economy?
Gilborn and Youdell
What did Gilborn and Youdell argue about schools? (A-C economy).
Schools operate a triage system based on perceived ability. Educational triage works on similar lines as military triage, with schools rationing education on perceived chances of students gaining 5 good (A-C) GCSE’s. 1. Borderline students who could get 5 A-C’s but need help so are prioritised 2. More able students who will probably get 5 A*-C’s so dealt with as necessary 3. Hopeless cases written off
Two pieces of evidence for streaming?
Ball and Keddie
Stephen J. Ball ‘Beachside comprehensive’ - what did it find?
Found teachers had differing expectations of students in differing ability bands. He said students recognised these differing expectations and consequently responded positively to high expectations and negatively to low ones. Conclusion? - differing expectations had an effect on educational achievement.
Evidence to support labelling and it’s effects? - What did Keddie find?
Came to similar conclusions to Ball. She found teachers defined appropriately knowledge for different ability bands. Different bands had unequal access to knowledge and resources. She concluded grouping of students into different ability bands affects educational achievement.
