External- Cultural Capital Flashcards
What is different about cultural capital compared to cultural deprivation?
Doesn’t see WC culture as inferior or lacking but just different. Instead of blaming WC underachievement on their culture, CC focuses on dominance of MC culture in society and social institutions.
Why are the MC more likely to succeed?
The education system is run by the middle class so runs on their interests. They can define their culture as superior and therefore WC students and their culture are marginalised in the education system and end up underachieving.
Who developed the concept of cultural capital?
Bourdieu
What is a habitus?
A cultural framework/ set of norms, values and ideas held by each social class in society.
What does a habitus consist of?
A set of assumptions about what counts as good or bad taste which influences factors such as: lewisite activities engaged in, places visited, holiday location, TV programmes watched, books read, music listened to.
What does the MC habitus place more value on?
Reading non-fiction and classic literature rather than pop literature. Watching documentaries not soap operas. Learning to play classical instruments. Going on educational visits (museums and libraries). Going on holiday abroad (‘broaden horizons’).
What do the activities favoured by the MC habitus provides for MC children?
Cultural capital- all the activities are inherently educational in nature and provide the MC with skills and knowledge that gives them an advantage at school. This knowledge can be specific (reading non fiction) or general (cultural trips for independence and self-confidence).
Where is MC culture dominant?
In most of the education system. Schools place high value on MC skills and knowledge. MC children just ‘fit in’ and are at home in the environment so they do not need to be anything other than themselves to thrive in school.
