How may an Asian pupil be labelled?
Passive
What did Gillborn and Youdell find when studying black pupils?
They found that teachers had radicalised expectations due to preconceived ideas of their behaviours.
Teachers were also disciplining black pupils more harshly for the same misbehaviours of their white counterparts.
What effect did teacher racism have on black pupils?
Black pupils were excluded in higher numbers.
Black pupils were placed in lower sets or streams.
How were Asian pupils stereotyped?
Teachers believed that they were passive, would have a poor grasp on English and used simplistic language when speaking to them.
What are the three types of racist teachers?
Colour-blind racists, Liberal chauvinists and Overt racists.
What are colour-blind racist teachers?
Teachers who believe that all pupils are equal and don’t challenge any racism that they witness.
What are liberal chauvinist racist teachers?
Teachers who believe that black pupils are culturally deprived and have low expectations of them.
What are overt racist teachers?
Teachers who believe that blacks are inferior and actively discriminate against them.
What are the four responses to labelling?
Conformists
Innovators
Retreatists
Rebels
Who were the conformists?
The largest group with those who were keen to succeed and accepted the school’s goals and had friends of different ethnic groups.
Who were the innovators?
The second largest group who were pro-education but anti-school.
Who were the retreatists?
The tiny minority who were isolated individuals disconnected from the school and the subcultures outside it.
Who were the rebels?
