Internal Factor 2 - Streaming Flashcards
What is streaming?
Streaming pupils into sets based on ability
Once students are streamed, it can be hard to do what?
Move up and down the groups, they become ‘locked’ into their teachers expectations of them.
Studies show what about streaming pupils into sets?
Self fulfilling prophecy is most likely to occur here
What message do students placed in lower sets get from their teachers?
That their teachers have just ‘written’ them off.
Which Sociologist did a study on IQ in streamed pupils?
Douglas
What did Douglas find?
Children placed in lower streams at age 8, by age 11 their IQ had declined. Compared to those in higher streams, theirs had increased.
Who did a study on the ‘Triage’ system?
Gillborn and Youdall
What do Gillborn and Youdall say about streaming and the ‘Triage’ system?
Exam League Tables judge schools on their % of students who get 5 A*-C GCSE grades.
What is the Triage system put forward by Gillborn and Youdall?
- Students who COULD get 5 good grades but need help are prioritised.
- Students who are going to get 5 good GCSE grades are helped when necessary.
- ‘Lost Causes’, those who aren’t very likely to get good GCSE;s are written off.
Criticism of Streaming as a valid theory
- Quite deterministic, not all students in bottom sets fail
- Not all schools operate in the same way, some schools do put effort into all students
