stress
an individuals experience in response to an object or event and subjective, it depends on a person perception
internal stressor
stressor that is within the body of the individual (memory, genetics)
external stressor
stressor that is outside the body of the individual (school, work, alarm)
psychological response
emotional and cognitive change
biological response
involuntary, flight or fight response
acute stress
last a short time
mild acute stress can be beneficial
severe acute stress can be detrimental
characterised by intense psychological and physiological symptoms that are brief in duration
chronic stress
last a long period of time, caused by ongoing pressure and stressors.
can be harmful both physiologically and psychologically
eustress
positive perception of stressor
distress
negative perception of stressor
FFF in acute stress
an involuntary, physical response to a sudden and immediate threat/danger/emergency in readiness to confront stressor
cortisol in chronic stress
cortisol is realsed during FFF and during chronic stress
maintains arousal after FFF response, allowing the body to continue to deal with stressor
energise the body to deal with stress by increasing glucose in blood
excessive cortisol over long period of time can inhibit immune system
