Internal and external Jugular Veins Flashcards
What is the pathway of the Internal Jugular Veins?
1-Originate at the Jugular Foramen
2-descends to join the subclavian vein
What is the position of the Internal jugular vein in relativity with other things in the neck?
In mid lower neck- it lies lateral and then anterolateral to the carotid artery
At the level of the thyroid cartilage- the vein lies deep in the SCM muscle and emerges behind the muscle into the triangle created by the sternal and clavicular insertions of the SCM just above the clavicle
Where is cannulation into the internal jugular vein preferred?
on the right side as it is a direct path to the superior vena cava and avoids risk of the left sided thoracic duct
How do you surface mark the internal jugular vein?
1-find the common carotid arteries
2- the internal jugular vein is lateral to this
How can you find the external jugular veins?
they run from the angle of the mandible to the middle of the clavicle
Which borders of the triangle are used for central line insertion?
1- medial sternal head of the SCM
2-Medial 1/3 of the clavicle
3-Lateral clavicular head of the SCM
How do you insert the central line?
Insert needle at a 30 degree angle downwards directed towards the ipsilateral (same side of the body) nipple
why can complications occur when inserting the central line?
Due to close proximity of lungs (could cause pneumothorax) and carotid artery (could cause arterial puncture)
