Internal and external Jugular Veins Flashcards

1
Q

What is the pathway of the Internal Jugular Veins?

Q

What is the position of the Internal jugular vein in relativity with other things in the neck?

A

In mid lower neck- it lies lateral and then anterolateral to the carotid artery

At the level of the thyroid cartilage- the vein lies deep in the SCM muscle and emerges behind the muscle into the triangle created by the sternal and clavicular insertions of the SCM just above the clavicle

Q

Where is cannulation into the internal jugular vein preferred?

A

on the right side as it is a direct path to the superior vena cava and avoids risk of the left sided thoracic duct
