What is the function of the hypoglossal nerve?
A
Somatic Motor function only- innervating the muscles of the tongue

What is the anatomical course?
A
Hypoglossal nucleus is located in the MEDULLA OBLONGATA of the brainstem, the nerve leaves the cranium via the HYPOGLOSSAL CANAL

How do you test the function of the nerve?
A
ask patient to stick out their tingue. this allows you to test GENIOGLOSSUS MUSCLE which is innervated by hypoglossal nerve and allows you to stick out your tongue

What happens if the right hypoglossal nerve is damaged?
A
the left side of the tongue would protrude but not the right. The tongue would steer to the right towards the lesioned side
