What is the crucifix
Across with an image of the crucified cross on it. Usually near the altar and reminds us of the suffering and death of Jesus. Classic believes he paid for their salvation and to forgive their sins and give eternal life
What is the altar
The table where the Eucharist takes place. It is where the priest blesses the wine and bread. The altar reminds Christians of the death of Jesus. Jesus offers salvation. It reminds them they are sharing a meal as they remember the last supper
What is the baptismal front
A bowl of water where baptism takes place. Baptism is the first sacrament by which people become Christian. It’s an important feature as it is where a child has their original sin washed away. It means the child can now achieve salvation
What way does the church face and what is the significance of it
It faces the east as it means Catholics are praying towards the holy land. This was where Jesus was born, lived and died. The Sun rises in the east and is a reminder of the resurrection of Jesus bringing new life
What is the significance of stained glass windows
They usually display stories from the Bible or lives of the saints. E.g. Jesus’ baptism
What is the significance of tall domes or vaulted ceilings
It creates space which is pointing up showing a connection with God and Heaven
