Q

Plasma Membrane

A

Semi permeable - allow the passage of some substance but not others. Movement of substance through cell membrane occur in three ways: pores (tiny spaces in bilayer, through which water and other ions may pass through), lipids (substances such as alcohol that are lipid soluble (lipophilic) which dissolve through membrane) and channels (two types: one penetrates through membrane which allow passage of larger molecules or those studded in membrane a facilitate movement of substances that are lipophobic)

Facilitated Diffusion

A

Movement of molecules from areas of high concentration to low concentration through protein channels and carrier molecules and does not require energy.

Q

Bulk Transport

A

The movement of large amounts of fluids (pinocytosis) or solids (phagocytosis) into and out of a cell. Endocytosis (into cell) and exocytosis (out of cell).

Q

Passive Transport

A

Requires no energy. Includes diffusion (high to low), osmosis (water moving) and facilitated diffusion (high to low).

Q

Surface area to volume ratio

A

Larger area means less surface area: takes longer for materials/substances to be transferred in and out of cell. Smaller objects are more efficient. Volume (LWH), SA (sides times length times width)
