Internal Anatomy of the Pons and Cerebellum Flashcards
Where do fibers run in the infererior cerebellar peduncle?
It carries axons from the medulla to the cerebellum
Where do fibers run in the middle cerebellar peduncle?
It carries axons from the pons (pontine nucleus) to the cerebellum on the opposite side of the brain. The pontine nuclei get their input from the cerebral cortex, consequently the middle cerebellar peduncle relays information from the cerebral cortex to the cerebellum.
Where do fibers run in the superior cerebellar peduncle?
It carries axons from the cerebellum (Deep cerebellar nuclei) to the brainstem and forebrain
What is the pontine reticular formation important for?
Controlling eye movements, sleep, and arousal.
What does the caudal part of the pons have?
Vestibular nuclei, abducens nucleus, and the facial nucleus
What does the facial colliculus contain?
The loop of facial nerve over the abducens nucleus. The loop is called the genu of the facial nerve and it is what causes the bump.
What is the lateral lemniscus?
Auditory axons. Each lemniscus contains axons from both ears.
The motor nucleus of 5 and the principal chief sensory nucleus of 5 are both located at the same level in the pons, what do they each do? What about the spinal nucleus of 5? What does the mesencephalic nucleus of CN5 do?
Motor n. - motor fibers to muscles of mastication.
Principal or chief - Processes epicritic sensory information from the face.
Spinal n. - Protopathic information from the face.
Mesencephalic - proprioreceptive information involved in jaw reflexes
What is the medial lemniscus involved with?
Somatosensory
Where does the medial lemniscus terminate?
In the ventral posterior lateral nucleus in the thalamus. Topographic order in the representation of the body is maintained throughout the course of the medial lemniscus, with the arms, legs, and feet from medial to lateral in the pons.
